End Food Waste & Landfill Emissions

Calling All Residents to Advocate for Community-Wide Composting

On December 3rd, Table to Farm Compost and the Durango City Council will convene a study session about their Public Private Partnership (PPP) to increase composting participation. This five-year partnership was established in 2019, with a goal of achieving city-wide composting by 2025. Although we have made progress expanding food-waste pick-up service to 800 households and businesses through our free curbside service trial and Composting Market Study, we still have a long way to go to reach our intended goal of community-wide composting for 5,000 households.

The City of Durango has been a leader in recycling, being one of the few remote and rural towns in Colorado to provide recycling to every household. However, when this program was put in place, recycling organics, or composting, was overlooked. Instituting composting throughout the City of Durango is a crucial  benchmark to achieve the City’s Sustainability goals, and to directly mitigate the emissions from landfills that contribute to catastrophic climate change.

Good news: YOU can help us attain this landmark transition to an organics-free landfill!   Simply invest a few minutes to engage with your City Council in one of the following ways:

  1. EMAIL YOUR CITY COUNCIL. Let the City Council know the importance of composting to you, and that you support Durango’s future trajectory to divert all recyclable organics from landfills by adopting the following actions:
  • Provide a 50/50 cost-share incentive for household food waste pick-up service for all city residents who voluntarily choose to compost in 2025 and beyond, and
  • Direct and empower City staff to research and implement community-wide composting by 2026.

HOW: To send public comment to the Durango City Council, you can email CityCouncil@DurangoCO.gov. You can also contact a councilor directly by visiting their page on the Durango City Council website.

  1. SPEAK UP AT THE NEXT CITY COUNCIL MEETING ON TUESDAY NOV 19TH, 5:30 PM
  • Sharing your vocal support for composting and a landfill free of polluting organic waste at this regularly scheduled City Council meeting prior to the December composting study session enables City Council members to proceed with confidence. Strong public opinion and comment is critical any time the City Council considers new initiatives and service changes.

HOW: Attend in person at City Hall, 949 East 2nd Avenue. You can also attend via zoom.

This is our LAST MEANINGFUL CHANCE to make this matter a priority on the City Council’s docket before our current partnership expires. Act now to ensure the climate we pass on to future generations is habitable.
