City of Durango Takes Action on Organics

End Food Waste & Landfill Emissions

Calling All Residents to Advocate for Community-Wide Composting

Your voice was heard! Hundreds of comments poured into the Durango City Council about the importance of reducing food waste and recycling organics into compost. As a result, the City of Durango unanimously passed Resolution 2025-004 on January 7, 2025 “directing the City Manager to research organic waste management ordinances in other communities, conduct pilot organic waste management programs as case studies for Durango, and subsequently form an organic waste management citizen focus group.” This is an important first step in understanding options to increase food waste diversion in our community. See the full resolution here.

Actions being considered by the sustainability staff at the City include:

  • food waste drop-off locations
  • service rebates for low income households
  • support for commercial composting through the Visit Durango sustainable tourism funding, and
  • a pilot “Pay as you throw” program

Beginning in December 2026, the City has partnered with Colorado Circular Communities (C3) and their Strategic Technical Expertise for the Public Sector (STEPS) program. As part of this program, the City of Durango is now actively  researching and developing recommended ordinance elements and steps for implementation to support residential curbside organics (i.e., food waste & yard waste) recycling to be presented to the City of Durango City Council. These will be based on ordinances and funding structures in comparable communities, stakeholder input, and community engagement and feedback. Interviews with key stakeholders related to curbside organics recycling and potential future policies are currently underway.

T2F Launches La Plata Healthy Soils Program with Partners!

The La Plata Healthy Soils program will fund regenerative agriculture in La Plata County by collecting voluntary donations from consumers at participating restaurants and food businesses, which then support farmers in implementing climate-beneficial soil practices like cover cropping and composting. This program is an essential part of the 2025-2030 La Plata County Food Systems Plan. Led by The Good Food Collective, Table to Farm Compost, and Local First Foundation, and supported by Zero Foodprint and local technical assistance providers, the program will provide grants for farms to improve soil health, conserve water, and sequester carbon, with the goal of creating a resilient food system by reconnecting consumers with local producers.
